To me Christmas is a sacred time whose sacrum I wish to
capture and reinforce artistically. Unlike each birthday
when I realise that I grow old, Christmas is the
exception of the year when the cycle of nature is
concluded, when you get in touch with the absolute and
can be reborn spiritually. This unusual time opens up
for transcendent experiences and is a good moment for
difficult questions.
The material proof of my Christmas experiences is the
Polish so called “Christmas crèche” which I also call
“Christmas Mysteries.” They contain all my thoughts
connected to this sacred time and by making I get a
feeling of participation and presence in the old
traditions.
After settling down in Sweden these typical “Christmas
crèches” lost their characteristic simplicity. The works
expressed a mixture of polish traditions, combined with
my longing for my native country and all the experiences
of trying to adapt to a new and intricate culture. These
“Christmas crèches” were different in form and offered a
multitude of interpretations. I tried to find an
artistic experience of a family tradition united
Swedish, Slavic and Indo-European traditions. My
“Christmas Mysteries” aim mainly to celebrate the
Biblical message, the spirituality of human and nature
and the adoration of light. |
